The baroque marble hall

While listening to the works of Haydn, Schubert or Mozart you can admire the baroque marble hall, which is one of the most important concert halls in the city of Salzburg and the world. In earlier times, the marble hall was the former archbishop’s ballroom. Today, in addition to the concert venue, the hall is also a popular location for weddings, conferences or honors. The famous Mozart family has already played in the hall. Father Leopold Mozart and his children and Nannerl have demonstrated their musical skills here.

History of the castle

The palace, in which the marble hall is located, was a love gift from Prince Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau to the bourgeois Salome Alt. The castle was built in 1606, at that time still under the name Altenau Castle. Prince Archbishop Markus Sitticus later had it renamed “Mirabell”. This female first name comes from the Italian and is a symbiosis of “mirabile – admirable” and “bella – beautiful”.

In the period from 1721 to 1727, prince archbishop Franz Anton Fürst von Harrach had the palace rebuilt on a large scale and a closed complex was created. The master was the well-known Lukas von Hildebrandt. In 1818, the castle was damaged by a major city fire. Fortunately, the marble hall and marble staircase remained intact. One of the most valuable treasures of the castle are the angel figures in the stairwell by the baroque master builder Lukas von Hildebrandt.

The castle can be reached via the Mirabell Garden and Mirabell Square. It is very central and can be reached from most hotels in the old town in a few minutes.
